The Ying-shih Yü International Center for History and the Chinese Humanities was established in September 2023. It aims to facilitate global Chinese studies based on the value of freedom advocated by Prof. Ying-Shih Yü and promote exchanges of humanities scholars at home and abroad making Taiwan and NTU a gathering place for young talents.
This year, the Center launched the “YCHCH 2024-25 Visiting Fellow Program” and “YCHCH 2024-25 Visiting Junior Fellow Program”. In the first academic year, 8 scholars and 7 doctoral candidates are invited to Taiwan. The International Visiting Scholars and Students’ Welcome Tea Party was held on October 15 to promote exchanges between visiting fellows and NTU faculty members. YCHCH visiting scholars Prof. Stephen C. Angle, Prof. Evan Dawley, Prof. Yongtao Du including their collaborators, and all the visiting students enthusiastically participated in the event.
Mr. Chual-Hsin Teng, Chairman and Executive Director of Thin Chan Corporation, and Prof. Yu-yu Cheng, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, were also present to welcome the attendees. Prof. Yu-yu Cheng first delivered a speech affirming the center’s effort to promote international academic exchanges. Prof. Jo-shui Chen, director of the center, then introduced the future plans for the center. Finally, Prof. Stephen C. Angle, the visiting scholar representative, delivered a speech to express his gratitude for the opportunity created by this project to visit Taiwan and to commemorate Prof. Ying-shih Yü.
Among the Center’s visiting fellows, Prof. Stephen C. Angle explores Wang Yangming’s philosophical thoughts. Prof. Evan Dawley studies how the modern Chinese nation-state extended "sovereignty" to overseas Chinese communities. Prof. Yongtao Du comes to Taiwan to study the identity struggles and native soil connections of the Anyang diaspora in Taiwan. Research topics for visiting students cover from history of science, intellectual history, and cross-cultural exchanges. With two main topics of Knowledge and Cross-Culture, the research focus encompasses diverse directions that are bound to bring new insights and future perspectives to Chinese studies.
